About air quality in Newham
Newham covers the East London floodplain from Stratford and the Olympic Park down through Plaistow, Canning Town, and Beckton to the Royal Docks. The principal NO₂ pressure tracks the A13 (Newham Way / East India Dock Road) corridor and the Bow flyover approaches; the A12 cuts the western edge of the borough. Newham was within the original Central ULEZ from the ULEZ-extension boundary’s introduction, and background levels have improved materially since 2021.
PM₂.₅ across Newham is dominated by regional inflows from the east, and on weather-driven episodes the borough often shows higher PM₂.₅ than the rest of Inner London. Coverage is denser along the A13 and around Stratford and weaker in the southern Royal Docks wards, so the borough-level verdict is most reliable for the northern and central parts of the borough.
